At the tender age of six, Seth contracts a severe case of bronchitis, which is left untreated when his father, Dan Meyers, refuses to get him the medicine he needed. The bronchitis progresses to pneumonia and Seth is hospitalized, missing school and being forced to repeat 1st grade, where he meets long-time best friend, Alex Norton.
