Bio:
Joy Catherine Franklin-O’Neil was born just Joy Catherine Franklin on January 23, 1991. She grew up believing she was the oldest child of Judy and Ed Franklin. In 2005, however, she discovered the hidden truth: that she was actually the third child of Judy and George O’Neil. And the youngest sister of her long-time idol, super-model Grace (O’Neil) Wayne.
Something of a tomboy in nature, Joy grew up both loving to watch and play sports. She actively follows basketball and football, and played field hockey in high school. She would have done so in college, as well, had she not become pregnant in her freshman year.
Joy’s other “callings” in life are music and helping others. In high school, she was active in the chorus and founded a club dedicated to doing charity/volunteer work in their area. After the family moved to Gotham in 2007, she continued her charitable endeavors along-side her sister, Grace, and the family she had found there. Through school, she became close friends with Claire Richards, who also did a lot the same activities as Joy.
After her graduation in 2009, Joy enrolled in Gotham University as a psychology major, with a minor in music, in the hopes of coming away with a degree in music therapy.
Those hopes almost shattered before they began when, as a new freshman, she discovered she was pregnant.
The baby’s father, her high school boyfriend, Tristan Phelps, offered to ‘do whatever he could’ even though he was attending college in another state. He maintained that stance for the first three weeks after Joy told him, until his parents forced him into choosing this unborn child or his education. Seeing his dreams of becoming a doctor coming undone by his parents threats to “cut him off” if he didn’t renounce Joy and the baby, Tristan was bullied into walking away and preemptively signing over all rights to his son.
After Tristan’s betrayal, Joy became determined to ‘do it all herself.’ College, a baby… she was a modern woman and she did not need some man to carry her dreams to fruition. She raised her son, Logan Riley, and put herself through college, all without financial support from Tristan or his family. While she often relied up her sisters and family for babysitting and advice, pushed herself to make it on her own, without being a statistic.
She graduated in the spring of 2013, and soon found a job in a smaller psychiatric clinic, albeit one affiliated with Gotham General.
In 2012, she met and began a friendship with Chloe James, a hygienist from her son’s dentist’s office. As the friendship progressed, it slowly blossomed into a deep companionship… and something more. The “something more” turned romantic in 2013, when they took the leap towards becoming a couple. They dated exclusively for several months before finally moving in together in 2014, when Chloe was beginning the fertility treatments which would eventually give her a daughter, Aubrey.
They were legally married on July 22, 2017.
